STAR WARS: THE ACOLYTE Unexpectedly Climbs Back Into Disney+ Top 10 Two Years After Cancellation

Nearly two years after its debut and long after Disney pulled the plug on future seasons, Star Wars: The Acolyte has suddenly surged back into the spotlight.

Out of nowhere, it’s climbed into the Disney+ Top 10 again, landing at number nine on the U.S. TV chart according to FlixPatrol. That’s a pretty surprising comeback for a show that seemed like it had already faded into the background of the franchise.

What makes it even more interesting is the company it’s keeping. The brand-new animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is currently dominating the chart, sitting at number one for TV shows and third overall. Clearly, there’s a fresh wave of Star Wars interest happening right now, and somehow The Acolyte is riding the wave.

Set about a century before Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, the series follows Amandla Stenberg as a former Padawan who reconnects with her Jedi Master, played by Lee Jung-jae, to investigate a string of mysterious crimes. As the story unfolds, things spiral into something much darker than either of them expected, pulling back the curtain on dangerous forces operating in the shadows of the High Republic era.

When the show first premiered in June 2024, it dropped eight episodes and sparked a pretty divided reaction. Critics landed somewhere in the middle, giving it a 79% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences were far less impressed with a 19% score.

The show got off to an interesting start, and it had some really cool lightsaber scenes, but for me, the script was frustratingly weak, and the story stumbled.

Despite being the second most-watched Disney+ series of 2024, but I guess the numbers apparently weren’t strong enough to justify its massive price tag. Reports put the budget at around $230 million, and by December of that same year, Disney officially canceled it. That decision seemed to close the book on the series for good.

But now? It’s back on the charts, and nobody really knows why. Maybe fans are giving it a second chance. Maybe curiosity kicked in after its cancellation. Or maybe the current Star Wars lineup has people exploring everything the franchise has to offer. Whatever the reason, the resurgence is real, even if it’s unclear whether it will lead to anything more.

Since The Acolyte came and went, Lucasfilm has noticeably scaled back its Disney+ output. In 2024 alone, we got The Bad Batch final season, Tales of the Empire, Young Jedi Adventures Season 2, and Skeleton Crew alongside The Acolyte.

This year is much quieter, with only Maul – Shadow Lord and Visions Presents: The Ninth Jedi on the schedule. Ahsoka Season 2 is still on the horizon, but there’s no release date locked in yet.

On the big screen, the next chapter is already lined up. The Mandalorian and Grogu is set to hit theaters on May 22, bringing the franchise back to cinemas!

As for The Acolyte, its sudden return to relevance is an unexpected twist fans didn’t see coming.
