STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS Actor Sam Witwer Says He Was Originally Cast as Kanan in REBELS
Star Wars fans have enjoyed Sam Witwer’s take on Darth Maul in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. He also has provided voices for other characters in the series, one of which was Emperor Palpatine. Well, it turns out that he was also originally cast to take on the role of Kanan in Star Wars: Rebels!
During a recent interview with Star Wars Holocron, he talked about how Rebels was pretty much being built around him until Freddie Prinze Jr. came along with a great audition. Witwer explains:
"Rebels, for a second according to a few people at Lucasfilm, was called ‘The Sam Show’ because I was Kanan. And then they found Freddie [Prinze Jr] after they heard Freddie’s audition. I’ve got to be honest, I had a certain take on the character, and what I was doing was not better than what Freddie was doing.
"What Freddie was doing was better than what I was doing in my opinion, and I realized that when I saw it. I was like, wow, this guy is absolutely that character. I think that’s the way to go."
While it’s great to see that he’s happy for Prinze Jr., it’s hard not to think that he was at least a little disappointed that he lost a role that was originally created for him. I’d be interested in knowing what his take on the character would’ve been. But, I’m happy with what Prinze Jr. ended up delivering.
It’s always interesting to learn what could have been. Would you have liked to see Witwer take on the role of Kanan in Rebels?
