STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS Artist Shares Darth Vader Concept Art and How He Redesigned the Character

The series finale of Star Wars: The Clone Wars was incredible, it was pretty much a perfect conclusion to the story that the series set out to tell. Fans were incredibly happy and satisfied with it.

Anyway, the show’s art director, Kilian Plunkett, shared some early concept art that was created for the reimagining of Darth Vader for the series.

The Clone Wars ended with Darth Vader visiting the crashed Republic ship that Ahsoka Tano was on during the events of Revenge of the Sith. While there, he found the graves that Ahsoka and Captain Rex had made for the fallen clones along with his former Padawan's lightsaber, which Anakin Skywalker had given her shortly before his turn to the Dark Side. It was quite a wonderful moment and the design of Vader was fantastic.

Plunkett also revealed how he took designs used in Star Wars Rebels and tailored them for what we saw The Clone Wars finale. He said:

"This time, I opened the 3D model of Vader from ‘Rebels’ and tweaked it to fit the Clone Wars look. Then I worked over flat renders to make these clean, detailed drawings."

I hope we get to see Vader appear again in the upcoming animated series Star Wars: The Bad Batch.

As requested, here’s the turn for Darth Vader as seen in the coda for The Clone Wars. The process for this design was unusual. Normally I’d create the 2d art and the geometry of the final model would be based on that. This time, I opened the 3D model of Vader from ‘Rebels’ and tweaked it to fit the Clone Wars look.
