STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER Writer Chris Terrio Admits To Struggling with The Ending
J.J. Abrams and writer Chris Terrio certainly had their work cut out for them as they started to craft the story for the final film of the Skywalker saga. Star Wars: The Last Jedi really shook things up and these guys had to find a way to make what he did work for the initial story they set out to tell and then also bring an end to the entire saga.
In a making-of documentary that was released with the Blu-ray, Terrio admitted that he and Abrams struggled at a certain point with how to end Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. He said:
"J.J. and I were having a lot of trouble with the end of the film at one point in the process, and [production designer] Rick Carter said to us, ‘I think it's because you two don't want Star Wars to be over. You don't want the Skywalker saga to be over, so you don't really want to write it.’ And I think there was a lot of truth in that.”
The way the saga ended certainly divided fans. All of the films in this recent trilogy divided fans! Ending a special film saga like this, with so much riding on it, should have been done with more care. While each individual film has some great and exciting moments, the flow of the story as a whole just didn’t work. The odds were against the creative team on sticking the landing with the ending. That’s the pressure that Abrams and Terrio were feeling! It wasn’t that they didn’t want the Skywalker saga to be over! They knew whatever they did wasn’t going to make all the fans happy.
The Skywalker Saga is finally over now, though, and we got what we got. Now the franchise can move on to new and different things. Hopefully Lucasfilm learned from their mistakes!
