There’s an intriguing and fun theory circulating online suggesting that Star Wars: Skeleton Crew might secretly serve as a prequel to Disneyland’s iconic 1980s sci-fi musical short film, Captain EO.
This theory has sparked a lot of excitement among some fans. There’s a Reddit thread where fans dissected potential connections between the two projects.
Even before Skeleton Crew aired, there was speculation of a possible link to Captain EO. Now, after seeing the series, fans are doubling down on the idea. Here are some connections:
Character Resemblances: Fans note that Wim, one of the young adventurers in Skeleton Crew, bears a striking resemblance to a young Captain EO. Meanwhile, Neel is compared to Hooter, the clumsy, alien from Captain EO. These parallels are too specific for fans to dismiss as coincidence.
Familiar Alien Species: A caged alien seen in Skeleton Crew is identified as the same species featured in Captain EO. This visual callback this is deliberate.
Premiere Location: Then there’s the eyebrow-raising detail that the premiere of Skeleton Crew was held in the same Disneyland theater where Captain EO was originally screened. This venue choice feels more symbolic and has to be a nod to the shared DNA between the two stories.
Captain EO was a 3D sci-fi musical short film that premiered at Disneyland in 1986. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and produced by George Lucas, it starred Michael Jackson as Captain EO, a spacefaring hero on a mission to deliver a gift to an evil Supreme Leader (played by Anjelica Huston) and save her world.
I personally loved Captain EO as a kid. Every trip to Disneyland wasn’t complete without watching it. Even though I only saw it three or four times before it closed, the movie left a lasting impression on me.
Its mix of imaginative world-building, musical energy, and message of hope captured everything magical about the Disney parks in that era.
While I find the theory incredibly cool, I’m skeptical. Lucasfilm hasn’t exactly shied away from exploring bold ideas in its Star Wars content, but officially tying the series to Captain EO seems like a stretch.
That said, the parallels are strong, and there’s no doubt in my mind that Captain EO was part of the inspiration for Skeleton Crew.
