STAR WARS VII: Combat Demo of How Lethal The Crossguard Lightsaber Could Be

The cross-guard lightsaber wielded by Kylo Ren drew a lot of love and hate from Star Wars fans when The Force Awakens trailer debuted. Some called it impractical, while others thought it was badass. Stephen Colbert even defended its practicality while many fans took humorous jabs at the lightsaber design.

YouTube user ThegnThrand created three videos that analyze, demonstrate, and test to see if such a design is usable. Using his knowledge of Viking broadswords, Thrand shows how crazy deadly the crossguard design has a potential to be. To prove that Ren wouldn't cut himself with the quillons coming out the sides, Thrand dips the ends of mock-up lightsaber quillons in paint, and performs elaborate moves without getting much (if any) paint on himself. I think Thrand makes a great case of how lethal and usable this weapon could be, but we'll have to wait until Star Wars: The Force Awakens comes out to find out.
