Starz is Developing an OUTLANDER Prequel Series with Ronald D. Moore Returning To Produce
Starz is developing a prequel to its popular Outlander series. Outlander executive producer and showrunner Matthew B. Roberts is attached to write and executive produce the show and Ronald D. Moore, who developed the original series, will also executive produce. A writers room is currently being assembled and work on the series is going to commence in the coming weeks.
This news comes as Outlander Season 6 is about to debut on Starz next month. Outlander is based on the novel series by Diana Gabaldon. The series stars Caitríona Balfe as Claire Randall, a married former World War II military nurse in Scotland who, in 1945, finds herself transported back in time to 1743. While there, she meets and falls in love with, and marries a Highland warrior named Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), a Tacksman of Gabaldon's fictionalized version of Clan Fraser of Lovat, and becomes embroiled in the Jacobite rising.
Gabaldon recently shared in a Facebook post that she’s currently working on a prequel novel about the parents of Jamie Fraser, Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser. She also wrote a prequel novella titled Virgins, the story of which focused on a young Jamie Fraser and Ian Murray in 1740s France.
There’s no information on if either of these stories will be a part of this recently announced prequel series.
Season 6 of the series is based on the Outlander book “A Breath of Snow and Ashes,” and that will consist of eight episodes. There is also a Season 7 coming, which is based on “An Echo in the Bone” and that one will consist of 16 episodes.
Outlander is one of Starz most popular shows, so it makes sense that they would want to expand on that universe.
