Step Into Orïsha in the CHILDREN OF BLOOD AND BONE Featurette

Paramount Pictures has pulled back the curtain on Children of Blood and Bone with an exciting first behind-the-scenes featurette that offers fans their first real look at the breathtaking world of Orïsha.

This preview introduces the characters, showcases the incredible production design, and gives audiences a taste of the epic fantasy adventure that director Gina Prince-Bythewood is bringing to the big screen.

The featurette opens the door to a world where magic has been stolen, hope has been crushed, and one young woman is willing to risk everything to change that. "With love and respect and passion."

Based on Tomi Adeyemi's bestselling fantasy novel, Children of Blood and Bone tells the story of Zélie Adebola, played by Thuso Mbedu, a young maji whose people have been stripped of their magic through the ruthless rule of the kingdom's kosidáns.

When the opportunity arises to restore what was stolen, Zélie sets out on a dangerous mission alongside her brother, eventually joining forces with the king's own daughter and son to stand against a brutal regime.

The film's official synopsis reads: "In the epic fantasy world of Orïsha, a young woman goes on a quest to reclaim the magic that was violently stolen from her people. She and her brother ally with the daughter and son of the king to fight back against his brutal rule."

The movie also follows: "Heroine Zélie Adebola (Thuso Mbedu) as she attempts to restore magic to the kingdom of Orïsha, after the ruling class kosidáns' brutal suppression of the class of magic practitioners Zélie belongs to, the maji."

While the footage is brief, it's packed with cool visuals that hint at the scale of Prince-Bythewood's adaptation. From the vibrant costumes to the striking architecture and sweeping landscapes, Orïsha already looks like a fully realized fantasy world.

The featurette also spotlights the impressive creative team responsible for bringing it to life, including cinematographer Polly Morgan, Academy Award-winning production designer Hannah Beachler, hair department head Andrea Mona Bowman, and costume designer Charlese Antoinette Jones.

The film also stars Damson Idris as Prince Inan, Amandla Stenberg, Tosin Cole, Cynthia Erivo, Lashana Lynch, Zackary Momoh, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Regina King, with Idris Elba and Viola Davis.

Prince-Bythewood directs the film from a screenplay she co-wrote with Tomi Adeyemi, adapting Adeyemi's acclaimed novel for the big screen. The filmmaker's previous work includes Love & Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees, Beyond the Lights, The Old Guard, and The Woman King, making her an exciting choice to helm a fantasy story of this size and scope.

This first look feels like an invitation into a world that's been crafted with incredible care, and if the featurette is any indication, Children of Blood and Bone has the potential to deliver one of the biggest fantasy movie events of 2027. Thankfully, fans won't have to wait long for another look because the full trailer arrives tomorrow.

Children of Blood and Bone is scheduled to open in theaters on January 15, 2027.
