Stephanie Meyer's Number One Choice to Play Edward Cullen in TWILIGHT Was Henry Cavill

The Twilight film series was a major phenomenon, from its book and movie ticket sales to its seemingly perfect casting. The fanbase was rabid, first rushing to read the books by Stephanie Meyer, then flocking to the theatres to see Edward (Robert Pattinson), Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Jacob (Taylor Lautner) in the love triangle of the decade. But if the author of the books had had it her way, Edward would have been played by Super-Man actor Henry Cavill.

Back when the film was first being discussed by Meyer and the studios in 2004, four years before finally landing in theaters, the Man of Steel actor was only 21 years old. But by the time the ball was rolling three years later, Meyer lamented in her blog (fully aware that she was not in charge of casting) that her dream Edward actor had aged out of the role:

Years have passed, my actors have aged, and I think the time has come to recast the Twilight Movie. (For fun, of course! I still have no say in who gets hired.) The most disappointing thing for me is losing my perfect Edward. Henry Cavill is now twenty-four-years-old. Let us have a moment of quiet in which to mourn…

But she hadn’t lost all hope in Cavill’s involvement. She went on to say:

I’m not willing to relinquish Henry completely; since I hear that Charlie Hunnam refuses to consider scripts which include vampires, I propose that Henry play Carlisle! Would Henry dare to find out if blondes DO have more fun??

Dang, I actually think that Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam and Henry Cavill would have each done fantastically in the role of Carlisle! They’re both super hot, and while the actor who got the role is a good-looking guy, these two are next level. My biggest complaint about the whole series is some of the actors they chose to fill the roles of the vampires, who were all supposed to be incredibly gorgeous. I know that’s a tall order, but some were so far off it was distracting.

As it all turned out, Pattinson was perfect in the role of Edward, and the films are beloved for all their terrible awesomeness. Would you have liked to have seen Cavill in a role in Twilight?
