Stephen King Reveals His 10 Favorite Movies of All Time

When Stephen King isn’t scaring us with his novels or seeing his stories adapted into hit films, he’s just like the rest of us and watching movies he loves. Recently, King took to X to share his all-time favorite films, but he made one rule: no picking his own adaptations.

King wrote:

"My 10 favorite movies (excluding MISERY, SHAWSHANK, GREEN MILE, STAND BY ME). In no particular order:

SORCERER

GODFATHER 2

THE GETAWAY

GROUNDHOG DAY

CASABLANCA

TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE

JAWS

MEAN STREETS

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE 3rd KIND

DOUBLE INDEMNITY"

That’s a strong lineup. From timeless classics like Casablanca and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre to the raw grit of Mean Streets and the paranoia-fueled Sorcerer, King’s list shows off a wide range of taste.

Of course, Jaws and Godfather Part II are practically untouchable masterpieces. The most surprising choice might be Groundhog Day, which also happens to be the newest film on his list, having been released back in 1993.

King has always been vocal about his love for movies and TV. Not long ago, he praised longtime collaborator Mike Flanagan, calling him the “Quentin Tarantino of horror.”

And while King’s personal favorites are making headlines, one of his stories is about to hit the big screen. The Long Walk, based on his 1979 novel, opens September 12 and features Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Ben Wang, and Mark Hamill. Directed by Francis Lawrence, the film is already generating huge praise.

So while King has his own list of cinematic greats, he continues to inspire filmmakers to create new ones from his work.
