Stephen King Wrote a New Ending for Series Adaptation of THE STAND
Director Josh Boone (The Fault of Our Stars, The New Mutants) is currently in the process of developing an epic series adaptation of Stephen King’s incredible novel The Stand. As you might image, the series adaptation is going to be somewhat different than the book – in fact the series is going to be given a whole new ending, and that end was written by King himself!
King is writing the script for the ninth episode of the series, which CBS All Access EVP Julie McNamara said will include “a new coda that won’t be found in the book.” She goes on to explain what this new ending will entail:
“For fans of the book who have wondered what became of the survivors of the stand, this episode will contain a story that takes us beyond the book to answer those questions. A continuation to The Stand; we can’t wait to share that with the world.”
That’s pretty awesome! That something that I’ve always wondered about, and the fact that we are actually going to get some answers to those question is awesome and exciting!
Some casting for the series was also recently confirmed. These actors were already previously reported to have these roles, but now it’s been confirmed:
James Marsden (Westworld) will play Stu Redman, a Texan who is the first man discovered to be immune to the Captain Trips virus that has ravaged the planet. He eventually becomes a leader in a community known as the Free Zone, and is tasked with confronting the evil Randall Flagg.”
Amber Heard (Aquaman) will play Nadine Cross, “a private school teacher and virgin who believes she has a unique destiny to be by Flagg’s side.”
Odessa Young (Assassination Nation) will play Frannie Goldsmith, “a pregnant woman who leaves her devastated community with a man named Harold Lauder, but ends up falling in love with Stu, much to Harold’s chagrin.”
Henry Zaga (The New Mutants) will play Nick Andros, “a young, deaf-mute grifter who wears an eye patch for most of King’s book.”
When previously talking about The Stand being adapted into a series, King said:
“I’m excited and so very pleased that The Stand is going to have a new life on this exciting new platform. The people involved are men and women who know exactly what they’re doing; the scripts are dynamite. The result bids to be something memorable and thrilling. I believe it will take viewers away to a world they hope will never happen.”
The Stand tells the story of good vs. evil after a virus wipes out most of the American population. While it features dozens of characters and overlapping storylines running over many years, the struggle boils down to a group of survivors fighting the Antichrist-like character named Randall Flagg, who is a reccurring character in King’s stories.
What do you all think about King writing a new ending for the story for this series adaptation?
