Steven Soderbergh Takes on What is Just and What is Murder in the Documentary LEAVENWORTH
Committing crimes overseas is a real threat for our soldiers and they bring real consequences with them when they come home. What is considered a crime or an act of patriotism? That is the concept that is going to be explored in the upcoming Starz documentary Leavenworth. This Steven Soderbergh produced documentary is all about Lieutenant Clint Lorance, and what he did.
In July of 2012, Lorance ordered his men to fire upon three men in Afghanistan, killing two. That we know. The result of these actions landed Lorance in Leavenworth Military prison in Kansas. He was given 19 years on two counts of murder. Now this is where the controversy lies, some people are calling him a murderer, while others are calling him a patriot. Deadline broke the news of this upcoming documentary, here is their synopsis:
Leavenworth tells the story of Clint Lorance, who is serving a 19-year sentence for murder at The United States Penitentiary, Leavenworth. While deployed in Afghanistan in July 2012, the former lieutenant ordered fire on three local men riding a motorcycle, killing two of them and outraging his platoon. In a first-hand account of a soldier navigating the US Army’s legal system, Lorance seeks to overturn his conviction, provoking emotional debate between supporters and detractors that rises to the national stage.
As determinations on Lorance’s fate unfold, questions probe not only the merits of his conviction, but analyze the system at large and ultimately test the balance of guilt and innocence in the inscrutable circumstances of today’s wars.
This true-crime documentary will be released October 20th, 2019 on the Starz network. This seems like something I would totally love to watch. Let us know what you think.
