Steven Soderbergh Wrote a Sequel To SEX, LIES, AND VIDEOTAPE and He Wants To Develop It Into a Film

While writer and director Steven Soderbergh (Oceans Eleven, Traffic) has been in lockdown, he has used his time wisely and ended up writing three scripts so far. One of those scripts is a sequel to his 1989 film Sex, Lies, and Videotape and he hopes to develop it into a feature film.

During a remote interview on the YouTube series Flaviar’s NightCap Live, the writer-director revealed this interesting bit of information and says that the sequel is an idea that he’s been looking to do for a while:

“When the lockdown happened here in New York, in order to stay organized and sane, I decided I’m going to write… So within the first 6 or 7 weeks of the lockdown, I finished 3 screenplays. One of them was a rewrite, one of them was an original, and one was an adaptation of a novel that I’ve been wanting to do. The original was a sequel to Sex, Lies, and Videotape. It was an idea that had been circling for a while, and I felt like I came up with the way to get back in, and so I wrote it, and I want to make it.”

Soderbergh didn’t reveal any details on the story for the sequel to Sex, Lies, and Videotape, but the first film was his very first feature film and he ended up getting an Oscar nomination for Best Writing. The film also received three Golden Globe nominations and won the Palme d’Or at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival.

The original movie starred James Spader, Andie MacDowell, Peter Gallagher, and Laura San Giacomo and the story centered around a sexually repressed woman’s husband who is having an affair with her sister.

It’ll be interesting to see if Soderbergh ends up bringing back members of the original cast.
