Steven Soderbergh's NBA Sports Drama HIGH FLYING BIRD Picked Up By Netflix

Steven Soderbergh’s next film project is an NBA sports drama called High Flying Bird and Netflix just picked up the global rights to it.

The movie has an impressive cast that includes André Holland (The Knick), Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Melvin Gregg (UnREAL), Sonja Sohn (The Chi), Zachary Quinto (Star Trek: Beyond), Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks) and Bill Duke (Predator).

The story for the film set during a pro basketball lockout, and follows “a sports agent who pitches a rookie basketball client an intriguing and controversial business proposition.” Holland takes on the role of the agent, Beetz is his right-hand, and Gregg plays the rookie basketball player.

The script for the film was written by Moonlight writer Tarell Alvin McCraney. Soderbergh had this to say about Netflix picking up his film:

“We had several strong options for distributing High Flying Bird, but to borrow the patois of the movie itself, this deal felt like a slam dunk and the perfect way for me to begin my relationship with Netflix as a director.”

Netflix is planning to release the film in 2019. Soderbergh is a favorite director of mine. I love the films that he’s made in his career and I can’t wait to see how his latest project, High Flying Bird, turns out!
