Steven Spielberg is Developing a CORTES Miniseries For Amazon with Javier Bardem

Steven Spielberg is set to develop a new miniseries for Amazon that will tell the legendary story of the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés. The series will be called Cortes and according to Tracking Board, Javier Bardem will take on the lead role in the series, a role that he is absolutely perfect for.

Spielberg has been developing this project for a few years already as a possible project for him to direct. HBO is also developing a similar project with Martin Scorsese and Benicio Del Toro, but the momentum on that has stalled, so Spielberg and Amazon on moving forward.

The script of the series was written by Oscar-winning Schindler’s List scribe Steve Zaillian, and it was based on a 50-year old script written by blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo.

The story will follow Cortés as he changed the course of history when he led a rebellious expedition that caused the fall of the Aztec Empire. This is definitely going to make for a great series! Sharon Yguado, Amazon’s head of scripted series said:

"Cortés’ epic discoveries shaped the world as we know it today, and through the minds of Amblin, Steven Spielberg, Steve Zaillian and Javier Bardem, we will bring Prime Video members on an exhilarating journey. There are few moments in history that shape an entire culture such as Cortés’ story, and this series will be one filled with drama and adventure."

Javier Bardem added:

"It is a privilege to tell this epic story— one that is full of drama and conflict within this huge, historical spectacle where two distant civilizations clash at the height of their reign. The best and worst of human nature came to life in all its light and darkness. As an actor, there is no better challenge than to serve such a unique project that I have been passionate about for years."

Cortes will be a four-hour miniseries. I like that they are doing it this way because they will be able to tell more of the epic story behind Cortez. This is a promising project that I'm confident will turn out great, especially with the talent involved.
