Steven Spielberg Is Writing a "Super Scary" Horror Series That You Will Only Be Able to Watch at Night
For those of you who are fans of Steven Spielberg, I‘ve got some cool news for you today! He is writing a horror series for Quibi called Spielberg’s After Dark, and it will only be available to watch when people’s phones knows that it’s dark outside.
He is working on the project with his former DreamWorks partner and founder of Quibi, Jeffrey Katzenberg, who said the series will be super scary:
“Steven Spielberg came in, and said, ‘I have a super scary story I want to do.' He’s writing it himself. He hasn’t [written anything in a while] so getting him to write something is fantastic.”
Katzenberg revealed that Spielberg has already “written five or six episodes (which Quibi calls “chapters,” like a novel) of a 10- or 12-chapter story.”
As for only being able to watch the series after dark, that was Spielberg’s request. “He wanted viewers to only be able to watch the program after midnight. Given that phones can track where it is at the moment — and keep tabs on when the sun rises and sets in its area — Katzenberg and Whitman challenged their engineers to come up with an idea for how to view the show when it’s spooky out.”
So how will that work? Well, it’s explained that “a clock will appear on phones, ticking down until sun sets in wherever that user is, until it’s completely gone. Then the clock starts ticking again to when the sun comes back up — and the show will disappear until the next night.”
This is actually a fun little gimmick. But I’m mostly excited about the fact that Spielberg is actually writing a horror story for fan to enjoy! I might actually subscribe to the service just for that and then cancel when it’s over.
Quibi will launch on April 6th, 2020. The first tier costs $4.99 with one pre-roll ad before each video segment — a 10-second ad if the video is less than 5 minutes and a 15-second ad for 5-10 minute videos. An ad-free option will cost $7.99.
What do you think about Spielberg writing a new horror project?
