Steven Spielberg Offers Update on READY PLAYER TWO Movie; He Will Not Direct The Sequel
I was a fan of both the Ready Player One novel and Steven Spieilberg’s film adaptation. I know there are a lot of differences between the two, but I did enjoy the film for what it was, and it was a lot of freakin’ fun!
There are fans who have been wondering if we will ever see a film adaptation of the sequel, Ready Player Two. I was not a fan of that book, so if the movie eventually gets made, they can change the story for that up all they want.
A few years ago it was announced that the movie was in early development. But now, Spielberg has offered a recent update. While talking to Showbiz 411, Spielberg confirmed that he is only a producer on the project and that, "We're in the discovery phase, trying to figure out what's next.”
So, it sounds like the film has got a long long way to go before we see it on the big screen, if that actually ends up ever happening. There is a chance that Warner Bros. isn’t interested in making a sequel because the first movie didn’t end up being the big hit that the studio hoped it would be.
When previously talking about the film, the author of the book, Ernest Cline, said: "It’s in the early stages right now, especially since Hollywood is in limbo right now. But I can tell from the experience of making the first movie that everybody had a lot of fun. We talked about the possibility of there being a Ready Player Two when we were making Ready Player One. In Hollywood you never know. I really tried my best to focus on just writing a sequel to my book. There are characters in the movie that are alive that aren’t alive in the book. I focused on trying to give fans the book without letting the film influence me. The movie will sort itself out later."
In Ready Player Two, "Days after winning OASIS founder James Halliday's contest, Wade Watts makes a discovery that changes everything. Hidden within Halliday's vaults, waiting for his heir to find, lies a technological advancement that will once again change the world and make the OASIS a thousand times more wondrous — and addictive — than even Wade dreamed possible. With it comes a new riddle, and a new quest — a last Easter egg from Halliday, hinting at a mysterious prize. And an unexpected, impossibly powerful, and dangerous new rival awaits, one who'll kill millions to get what he wants. Wade's life and future of the OASIS are again at stake, but this time the fate of humanity also hangs in the balance. Lovingly nostalgic and wildly original as only Ernest Cline could conceive it, Ready Player Two takes us on another imaginative, run, action-packed adventure through his beloved virtual universe, and jolts us thrillingly into the future once again."
Do you think Ready Player Two will ever get made?
