Steven Spielberg Says The Iron Giant Plays a Major Role in READY PLAYER ONE

During the big Hall H Comic-Con presentation for Ready Player One, the first teaser trailer was released for the film, and if you haven't seen it yet, you can watch it here. I absolutely loved what I saw and I think fans are going to get the incredible adaptation that we are all hoping for.

One of the many cool things that was shown in the trailer was a shot of the Iron Giant with Parzival. That was a visual I wasn't expecting to see and I was so excited when it popped up!

After the trailer ended, one of the first things that Spielberg made a point of saying is that the Iron Giant was going to play a major role in the story! Iron Giant doesn't have a big role in the book, but if you've read the book you know there's a big important story element involving giant robots. If you've read the book and we see that Parzival is hanging out with Iron Giant, you probably know how the robot could play into the story.

Now I'm going to get into spoiler aspects of the story:

To complete the Second Gate, a player had to complete a full recreation of the game, Black Tiger, from beginning to end. After the completion of the game, the player is able to select one of several robots from a list to add to their inventory for later use in the game. Some of those robots included Gigantor, Tranzor Z, the Iron Giant, Jet Jaguar, Leopardo, Voltron, Giant Robo, robots from the Shogun WarriorsMacross, and Gundam franchises and hundreds more.

Spielberg didn't clarify how Iron Giant would actually be utilized, so we can only really speculate at this point. I think that may be the robot that Parzival chooses in the film. In the book he chooses Leopardo. If he actually does choose Iron Giant, there may be a chance we will see Iron Giant battle Mechagodzilla! The scene in the trailer that we see him in, it looks like maybe this might be the final battle at Anorak castle. However, Iron Giants involvement could be completely different. This is just me speculating.

Regardless, The Iron Giant is my favorite animated film of all time, so I couldn't be happier and more excited to learn that the giant robot will have a big role in the movie!
