Steven Spielberg Wasn't Happy With The Popular Award Oscar Category and It Won't Be Implemented This Year
Remember when it was announced that there would be a new Oscar category for popular films? Turns out that cinephiles aren’t the only ones who were not thrilled about this. The Academy has recently decided that this new category will not be introduced at the 91st Academy Awards ceremony in 2019.
The statement explains that the announcement of the new category a whole nine months into the year “created challenges for films that have already been released.” The Academy says that it will continue discussing the possibilities of this new category and fine-tune it a bit more.
They have not announced a new timeline for the award to be implemented which leads me to believe there will be at least 2 years before we hear about it again.
The New York Times also reports that several Academy members, including Steven Spielberg and Laura Dern, were not happy with the new category said that it should not be added. The report says Dern "adamantly opposed" and Spielberg "was uncomfortable with plans to introduce the category at the coming Oscars."
Should they just scrap this whole popular movie award completely, or fine-tune it before introducing it in a couple years?
