Story Details Revealed for TRON 3; The Director Says It Was Going to Be an Invasion Movie
There's a whole Tron fan base out there, like me, hoping that one day Disney will let director Joseph Kosinski make his Tron 3. Unfortunately, there are no current plans to make it happen. During a recent interview with Collider, Kosinski said that the film was in "cryogenic freeze" and says:
"It’s not dead. It’s alive, but it’s sitting there, waiting for the right time to move forward."
He shouldn't be getting our hopes up like that because I've heard from a friend of mine who works at Disney that the film is completely dead. I guess there's a chance it could be reignited but I'm not going to hold my breath. Maybe when the Star Wars and Marvel films dry up they'll do it, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.
Regardless of that, thanks to the director, we now have some cool details on the story that the film would have told. He describes it as being an invasion film, saying:
"The movie was called, 'TRON: Ascension', I think that’s out there. I think we got the script to about 80%. We were in good shape. We were probably eight or nine months out, which is still a good amount of distance from being ready to shoot it, but I think the script was in good shape. What I’m excited about is the concept, which is an invasion movie from inside the machine coming out as opposed to one we’ve usually seen. So we hinted at that at the end of Legacy with Quorra coming out, but the idea for Ascension was a movie that was, the first act was in the real world, the second act was in the world of TRON, or multiple worlds of TRON, and the third act was totally in the real world. And I think that really opens up, blows open the concept of TRON in a way that would be thrilling to see on screen. But there’s also a really interesting character study in Quorra and a 'Stranger in a Strange Land,' trying to figure out where she belongs having lived in the real world for a few years, and where does she fit in."
Damn! It's a bloody shame that movie never moved forward when it was ready to go! That sounds like it could've been awesome! I'm one of those guys who fell completely head over heels for Tron: Legacy, and this would have been such a cool continuation of the adventures of Quorra and Sam. He went on to explain how what Quorra would have been able to do in the real world as the first digital human hybrid:
"I don’t see them having superpowers. I don’t see them being able to shoot lasers from their eyes or do what I would consider to be a superhero-type movie. But in her DNA itself, her being the first digital-human hybrid, there’s something in her being that allows objects from inside the Grid to exist in the real world and makes them permanent, so that was the idea. So I think the idea is strong, it’s just a matter of the right time and the right place and the stars aligning as they have to do for movies."
Hearing this stuff makes me wish even more that Disney wouldn't have shut it down. I just think the time has passed for the sequel and Disney will never do it. But you never know. Who would have thought that Tron would get a sequel 20 years after it was made? What do you think of Kosinski’s idea for a third Tron movie?
