STRANGER THINGS 3 Found Inspiration from INDIANA JONES, THE THING, JURASSIC PARK, and More

As you know, there are classic films that have inspired each of the seasons of Stranger Things. These film have inspired certain scenes and tones on the show, and the Duffer Bros. looked at several other films to help them with Stranger Things 3.

While talking to EW, Ross Duffer said that “this is our most unapologetically fun season. Yet at the same time, it is also our most horrifying and intense season. It’s this wild mix of tones that we think really sets this season apart.” He then went on to reveal a list of films that helped them find that mix of tones. Those film include:

  • Fast Times at Ridgemont High

  • The Thing

  • Romancing the Stone

  • Midnight Run

  • Indiana Jones

  • Jurassic Park

  • The films of David Cronenberg

All of the movie listed here are great, and if you’re a fan of Cronenberg’s early work in the 80s, then you know that means things are going to get psychedelically insane!

When previously talking about the third season, David Harbour explained that this season would be even more Speilbergian than Season 2:

"It’s bigger, and it’s more Spielbergian. I felt Season One was very Stephen King, Season Two was very Spielberg, and we get even more Spielbergian in our aesthetic. It’s got a lot of color to it this year, we really get into the ‘80s more; it’s ’85, Hopper has a whole new getup, he’s got a mustache — we’re leaning into it in a really fun, interesting way.

"Also it’s got a lot of love, and it always has from the very beginning. That’s the thing that’s very special about the show, it has tremendous heart. I always get choked up when I watch it, and this season is no different. It takes a lot of risks, but in its essence it’s going to smack you in the heart. It’s really funny and it’s really beautiful and there are some big, big surprises.”

That goes right along with the films the Duffer Bros. were looking for inspiration from. What are your thoughts on the films that inspired Stranger Things 3?

The third season of Stranger Things debuts on Netflix on July 4th.
