STRANGER THINGS Director Rebecca Thomas to Direct James Wan-Produced Sci-Fi Thriller MALIGNANT

Stranger Things director Rebecca Thomas has just landed a feature film directing gig for producer James Wan. She will be directing a sci-fi action thriller titled Malignant which is based on the Boom! Studios comic book Malignant Man, which Wan co-created.

The story focuses on Alex Gates, a patient dying of a terminal disease who is resigned to his fate … until it’s discovered that his malignant tumor is actually a mysterious alien parasite. Now imbued with some incredible powers and a renewed purpose, Gates is tasked with fighting a secret army lurking behind the veils of society while also peeling back his own secrets.

Sounds like it could make for a fun movie! It's set up at 20th Century Fox and the script is being written by Zak Olkewicz, who was a producer on the horror film Lights Out.

Brad Peyton (San Andreas) was previously attached to direct the film but he ended up dropping out to work on Rampage. Thomas seems like a great choice to take on Malignant, though. She previously directed the indie film Electrick Children, and she is set to direct a live-action film based on The Little Mermaid for Universal Pictures. She is also only one of two directors outside The Duffer Bros. and Shawn Levy to direct Stranger Things. The other is Andrew Stanton (John Carter, Wall-E)
