STRANGER THINGS Season 2 Has Wrapped Production and They've Taken a Lot of Risks
Stranger Things Season 2 has wrapped production and I couldn't be more excited to see where the story goes and leads the characters. Since the series is set in the 80s, you can bet that it's going to be packed full of more nostalgic 80s references. We've already seen our favorite characters all decked out in Ghostbusters costumes for Halloween.
We also know that there are going to be some new characters introduced this season and that the story will mostly revolve around Will Beyers and what he's going through since being rescued from the Upside Down. During a recent interview with Deadline, David Harbour, who plays Sheriff Hopper, talks a bit more about the series. First of all, he discusses living up to the expectation of fans and why he's afraid because of the obligation he feels to give them something great.
"There are a couple of things. We didn’t know what we were making. We didn’t know that it was that special. We thought it could be, but now we know that we have something special, and I think we feel an obligation for the fans. We feel an obligation to the people. I’m terrified in that way. I’m more afraid this season than I was last. I was very afraid last season, but I’m more afraid this season because we’re very aware we do not want a sophomore slump. Each scene I’m thinking a lot more specifically, and I’m thinking a lot harder. We feel the ownership of this great thing and the camaraderie, and also we feel this pressure."
He goes on to say that Season 2 will be taking a lot of risks:
"It’s like, you created vanilla ice cream in the first season, and it’s so tasty, so delicious, but in the second season you can’t redo vanilla. You have to create strawberry. Some people are going to like strawberry and some people are going to like vanilla better. But you can’t try to recreate vanilla. We’re going to take a lot of risks. I think people are going to be pissed off by things. I think they are going to be elated and excited about things. It’s all further in terms of going on this journey."
I hope that those big risks pay off! Deadline also talked to creators Matt and Ross Duffer and they revealed to them that they do have an end goal in sight. They know how the series is going to come to an end. Matt says:
“You have a grand plan, but then you discover so much cool stuff on the day. But I feel like we tend to have guard rails set up, because we do know generally where we want to go. And then you get to play inside that.”
His brother Ross Duffer, added:
“We’ve learned not to fight it as much. That you had this plan for where this character was going, and then you get here and you’re like, ‘Whoa, I don’t believe in it anymore.’ …We have a blinking light that we’re headed toward.”
This is comforting to know. One of the first things you learn in screenwriting 101 is to know your ending. You have the end in sight and write your story leading to that end. They've already revealed that their current plan is to go four or five seasons. So they've still got plenty of story to tell before they bring it to an end.
Stranger Things also stars Winona Ryder, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, and Noah Schnapp. The newcomers include Sean Astin, Brett Gelman, Will Chase, Dacre Montgomery, Linnea Berthelsen, and Broadway star Sadie Sink.
Stranger Things Season 2 will premiere on Netflix on October 31, 2017.
