STREET FIGHTER Character Teasers Reveal More of the World Warriors in Action
Paramount Pictures is giving fans a much better look at its upcoming Street Fighter movie, and the World Warriors are ready to throw down.
A new batch of character-focused teasers has been unleashed featuring plenty of fresh footage from the video game adaptation, putting the spotlight on many of the fighters who will be beating the hell out of each other in the movie.
The promos mix footage from Street Fighter with interview clips featuring the actors talking about taking on these iconic characters. Most of the main roster gets some time in the spotlight, although Guile and Akuma are noticeably absent from this particular round of teasers.
The story brings Ryu and Ken Masters back together after the two have become estranged. Chun-Li recruits the former friends to compete in the World Warrior Tournament, forcing them to put their issues aside as they get pulled into a much bigger fight involving the Shadaloo criminal organization and its leader, M. Bison.
Director Kitao Sakurai (The Eric Andre Show, Twisted Metal) has been given a pretty wild collection of characters to play with, and he previously explained that the goal was to avoid making something that feels like another standard video game movie.
"Everyone wanted to make a film with a distinct style and approach that didn't look like a typical video game adaptation. I was invited to do something unconventional and was really allowed to do my own thing. I wanted to keep that sense of fun and audacity, where you don't worry about what others think. I hope we managed to combine nostalgia with something fresh."
The official synopsis offers a better idea of what Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li are walking into: “Set in 1993, estranged Street Fighters Ryu and Ken Masters are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament: a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury. But behind this battle royale lies a deadly conspiracy that forces them to face off against each other and the demons of their past. And if they don’t, it’s GAME OVER!”
The movie has assembled a wild cast to bring the Street Fighter roster to life. Noah Centineo plays Ken Masters, Andrew Koji is Ryu, and Callina Liang takes on Chun-Li.
They’re joined by Cody Rhodes as Guile, Orville Peck as Vega, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog, Jason Momoa as Blanka, Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim, Olivier Richters as Zangief, and Hirooki Goto as E. Honda.
David Dastmalchian steps into the role of M. Bison, while Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoa’i plays Akuma. The rest of the roster includes Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, Eric André as Don Sauvage, Mel Jarnson as Cammy, Rayna Vallandingham as Juli, and Alexander Volkanovski as Joe.
If Sakurai and his team can capture the ridiculous energy of the games while delivering some badass martial arts action, this could be an awesome good time!
Street Fighter hits theaters October 16.
