STREET FIGHTER International Teaser Trailers Reveal New Footage From the Live-Action Adaptation
Paramount and Capcom are starting to ramp up the hype for the upcoming live-action Street Fighter movie, and fans just got another look at what the film has in store.
A pair of international teaser trailers have been released online along with a behind-the-scenes featurette that includes a few fresh shots from the highly anticipated video game adaptation.
The teasers themselves mostly mirror the first look that debuted last December, but the featurette adds some new glimpses of the cast in action while filming their fight sequences.
Among the quick new moments is another look at Guile, played by Cody Rhodes, squaring off alongside Zangief, portrayed by Olivier Richters.
There’s also a brief shot of Ryu, played by Andrew Koji, gearing up for battle, along with a quick action beat featuring Chun-Li, played by Callina Liang. Even though the footage is short, it gives fans a better sense of the physical intensity the movie is aiming for.
The project is being directed by Kitao Sakura, known for work on The Eric Andre Show and Twisted Metal. Sakura stepped in after Talk to Me filmmakers Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou exited the project.
Last year, Michael Philippou explained why their version of the film didn’t move forward, saying, “Just finding the time for it, it just didn’t line up properly for us. So we decided to focus on the original stuff. I guess, we’re not opposed to it, but it has to really kind of connect with us in a special way for us to actually do that thing.”
Danny Philippou added with a laugh, “I think we’d [frick] it up,”
The new adaptation takes fans back to the early ‘90s and centers on two of the franchise’s most iconic fighters.
“Set in 1993, estranged Street Fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament: a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury. But behind this battle royale lies a deadly conspiracy that forces them to face off against each other and the demons of their past. And if they don’t, it’s GAME OVER!”
The film features a wild lineup of talent bringing the legendary characters to life. Noah Centineo plays Ken Masters, Andrew Koji stars as Ryu, Callina Liang takes on Chun-Li, and Cody Rhodes appears as Guile.
The cast also includes Orville Peck as Vega, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog, Jason Momoa as Blanka, Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim, Olivier Richters as Zangief, Hirooki Goto as E. Honda, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoa’i as Akuma, Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, Eric André as Don Sauvage, Mel Jarnson as Cammy, Rayna Vallandingham as Juli, and Alexander Volkanovski as Joe.
With a huge roster of fighters and a World Warrior Tournament at the center of the story, it looks like the movie is leaning heavily into the classic elements that made the games a global phenomenon.
The live-action Street Fighter reboot is set to hit theaters on October 16, with Paramount and Capcom confirming that it will debut in Japan the same day it opens in the United States.
