Studio Ghibli Shares the Opening Scene of EARWIG AND THE WITCH
Studio Ghibli has finally created an official North American Twitter account. To celebrate the launch, the anime studio has released the opening scene from Earwig and the Witch. In the clip, Kacey Musgraves voices Earwig’s mother as she’s chased by a car and then leaves Earwig at an orphanage.
The film is the first 3D animation from Studio Ghibli, and many fans seem hesitant about it, but watching the clip it still does have a bit of that charm the studio is known for.
Most orphanages are horrible, but Earwig has a surprising amount of power over everyone at St Morwald’s Home for Children, and loves it there. The last thing she wants is to be adopted by the very strange Bella Yaga, demon-attended Mandrake, and talking black cat Thomas. Earwig wants to learn magic, but will need all her ingenuity and help from a familiar to survive. Expressive big eyes, twisty mouths, on stick figures flesh out the characters, action, and ravens and spiders adorn the margins.
Earwig and the Witch is directed by Goro Miyazaki and will be available at select theaters in North America on February 3 and streaming on HBO Max on February 5.
