Studio Ghibli’s Production Department Officially Reopened to Develop a New Film By Hayao Miyazaki

Hayao Miyazaki must just hate retirement because he's never really retired. Since his retirement announcement. Since he made his retirement announcement he started working on a short film called Boro The Caterpillar. He's become obsessed with this film and it's satisfied with it being a short film so he has been planning to develop it into a feature film. The short film won't even be released until 2021.

This is a story that Miyazaki has been planning for almost 20 years, so it makes sense that he would also want to develop it as a feature film. He describes the short as "a story of a tiny, hairy caterpillar, so tiny that it may be easily squished between your fingers."

We've heard about this over the past year regarding his plans to start development on the film. Now today it's official! Studio Ghibli has officially reopened its production department to start work on a new movie with Miyazaki at the helm! It's not confirmed that they are working on Boro The Caterpillar, but I assume it will be since he's been talking about it so much. Even if it's not, it's still awesome to hear that we will actually be getting a new Miyzaki movie in the future!

The official website of Studio Ghibli gives news of Miyazaki's new film saying which was translated as saying:

In His newsletter dated 10 August, Studio Ghibli announced the reopening of its production department, marked for this new beginning by organizing a small opening ceremony on 3 July.
On this occasion, hayao miyazaki brought together his main collaborators already engaged on his new feature film to talk to them about the project.
Studio Ghibli also confirmed that it had begun recruiting new staff (drawings / intervals, sets) for this new production, which was completed on 20 July.
The Studio has announced that it has never received so many requests, many from abroad.
As planned, the selected candidates will be trained in October and for a period of 6 months, before moving gradually into the production of the film which is still not known.

We know that Hayao Miyazaki recently started to dabble in CG animation to create Boro The Caterpillar. I assume that's would still be the plan and if that's the case, it will be his first CG animated movie. What's interesting about that is that at one point he called CG animation "an insult to life itself."

As a fan of Miyazaki's work, I could be more excited about the news that he's making a new movie! He's a living legend and I can't wait to see this new story from him brought to life by the talent of Studio Ghibli. I honestly don't think that Miyazaki will ever retire. He's just so damn passionate about telling his stories!
