SUPER MARIO MAKER 2 Online Play Will Be Limited

If you’re excited to create more Super Mario levels in Super Mario Maker 2, there’s some news that may be troubling. During the recent Nintendo Direct about the game, it was revealed that a few new features were going to be implemented including online play.

This meant that we could create crazy levels and then play them with our friends all over the world. Unfortunately, that’s not how it’s going to work. According to Nintendo World Report, online play will only support play with random users. That’s right, if you want to play with friends, you’ll have to get together and play on your couch or via local wireless.

Nintendo’s reasoning is that, with global leaderboards, the matchmaking for competitive play would be compromised if you could play with friends. That limitation also extends to co-op play as well despite those not being leaderboard driven.

To me, this says they didn’t want to put in the effort to create another mode that would allow for this without affecting leaderboards. It’s a shame if you ask me. Maybe they’ll add something in a future update, but what do you think? Is this a deal breaker for you?

Super Mario Maker 2 will release on Nintendo Switch on June 28.
