Supercut of ARCHER's References to X-Men, The Avengers, and More

The FX series Archer is often hilarious, but even though I consider myself a fairly intelligent person, I still find that a few of the jokes go over my head each episode. Sterling Archer is always making ridiculously obscure references, and like Community or any other meta property, when the audience actually gets those references, it enriches things even more.

Serena Bramble at Press Play has put together a supercut of every literary reference Archer has made over the course of the show's run so far, including times he's name-dropped superhero comics like The Avengers, X-Men, and The Fantastic Four. If you're a fan of the show who, like me, occasionally finds yourself missing a joke here and there, this video might shine a light on some of those.

[Series creator Adam] Reed has admitted that the show's many literary references, including the many from other characters not included for time, are the remnant of his tenure as a frustrated English major, yet their contrast with the more deplorable aspects of Archer's personality was probably the first indicator of his humanity, his intelligence when he chose to use it, and maybe even an indication of his lonely, friendless childhood and adolescence. Plus, of all the mixed-up characters on Archer, Reed seems to know that it's most fun to hear the debonair, narcissistic spy mention an obscure Herman Melville book at gunpoint, read 10 Babysitter's Club books in preparation for guarding his daughter, or wonder out loud if he's gay for Tolkien.
