SUPERGIRL Director Teases More Superman Scenes and a Complicated Cousin Dynamic
The upcoming Supergirl movie is shaping up to be more than just Kara Zor-El’s solo adventure. Director Craig Gillespie is opening the door to a deeper connection with Superman, and from the sound of it, things between the Kryptonian cousins aren’t exactly smooth sailing.
Gillespie recently shared new details about David Corenswet’s Superman involvement, confirming there’s at least one additional scene beyond what we’ve seen in the trailer.
That moment takes place when Kara first arrives on Earth, only to discover that the baby cousin she once knew has grown into the world’s most recognizable hero.
"It was actually our first day out the gate," Gillespie explained, pointing to a key sequence that dives into Kara’s origin. "She just landed, so she doesn't know English. So she's out of the gate speaking Kryptonian."
That scene will give us a strong sense of how different Kara’s experience is compared to Clark’s. While Superman grew up with stability and guidance, Kara’s journey begins with confusion, displacement, and loss. That contrast is exactly where the tension between them starts to build.
Gillespie didn’t hold back when breaking down why these two don’t always see eye to eye. "Superman hasn't gone through trauma.
“He came from a very loving family and was almost groomed to be in this role, whereas Supergirl has been through trauma and the role's kind of being pushed upon her at a later age, and she's having to adjust to that."
It’s a compelling angle that flips the usual dynamic. Instead of Superman mentoring Supergirl in a straightforward way, there’s an emotional gap between them that makes things more complicated.
"Even though they're cousins, you get this almost older-sibling dynamic, and that can be adversarial at times," Gillespie continued. "He's the gentle guy that wants to reach out and be patient, and she's having to find a way and find herself."
That push and pull could end up being one of the most interesting aspects of the film. Kara isn’t just stepping into a heroic role, she’s figuring out who she is while dealing with a cousin who already has it all figured out.
Most of Supergirl is expected to unfold across the cosmos, so Superman’s physical presence may be limited. Still, there are hints that his role might extend further than expected, especially with reports that Clark Kent appears in the film’s ending in recent test screenings.
There’s also speculation that Kara may have knowledge of threats like Brainiac that even Superman doesn’t fully understand yet, which could give her a unique edge moving forward.
Starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, Supergirl follows the hero on an interstellar journey filled with revenge, justice, and self-discovery. The cast also includes Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa, with a script by Ana Nogueira.
With its mix of cosmic adventure and character-driven conflict, Supergirl is sure to deliver a solid story. The film hits theaters on June 26, 2026.
