SUPERMAN Actor Says the Film Has the "Heart and Intelligence" of a James Gunn Movie, but Don't Compare It to GUARDIANS

Fans are hearing the first reactions to the early test screenings of director James Gunn’s Superman. Gunn has a solid history of making superhero movies, both in Marvel and DC, including The Suicide Squad and the Guardians of the Galaxy film trilogy and specials, as well as the DC series Peacemaker and Creature Commandos.

So we know he has it in him to make some great comic content, but one of the upcoming film’s stars says we shouldn’t compare this new movie to his greatest achievement and longest-running project yet, the Guardians trilogy.

Anthony Carrigan, who is known for his roles in the series Barry and the recent film Death of a Unicorn, plays Rex Mason/Metamorpho in this summer’s Superman, who, per the comics, can transmute himself into chemical compounds of his choosing.

When asked by THR if Superman will balance action, drama and comedy in the same effortless way that Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy did, Carrigan offers a different interpretation of the film’s tone.

“I am hesitant to liken it to Guardians, but I do think that [Superman] has the same heart and intelligence. That’s James’ trademark. But I think it’s going to be its own thing entirely.

“The process of working on it was such a special one, and the whole cast was on board with bringing something really special to it. So, hopefully, that’s conveyed onscreen.”

I have a lot of faith in Gunn’s vision. I have felt kind of a roller coaster of emotion when watching the trailers for Superman, but I have hope that Gunn will be able to pull it off. We will just have to wait and see.

Superman is set to fly into theaters on July 11, 2025.
