Fans love to tell filmmakers what the DC Universe should look like and James Gunn is definitely used to hearing about it. The filmmaker has been busy getting Man of Tomorrow ready to shoot, but he still makes time to interact with fans online.
Sometimes that leads to fun conversations and sometimes it spirals into odd debates about character demands and design choices. This week, Gunn chimed in with a bit of guidance for anyone who hops onto X, Threads, or Instagram to declare what “we” all want from the new DCU.
Gunn wrote on Threads: "If you want to see something from a filmmaker consider phrasing it as 'I' as opposed to 'We' ie 'I want to see Ambush Bug in the DCU' vs 'We want to see Ambush Bug in the DCU', 'I want to see an onscreen Batman with white eyes,' vs 'We want to,' etc.
“Your personal desire is meaningful and has weight, but when you frame your personal desire as a universal one, it rings false and becomes forgettable."
He wrapped the message with a playful note, "Own what you want! 🧜♂️"
That sparked plenty of chatter, with some fans calling it sage advice and others treating it like a lecture from the guy who should be focusing on finding his job as CEO of DC Studios.
Either way, Gunn’s online presence continues to be its own storyline. He debunks rumors, hypes the DCU slate, and casually drops creative insights whenever he feels like it.
Gunn also recently talked movies and TV, sharing his favorites of 2025 so far. "I loved Barbarian, but Weapons puts Zach Cregger in a different league," he said. "A movie that’s so weird, so wild, both tonally and structurally, and yet so accessible. And truly scary. Probably my favorite of the year."
He added another contender. "Although it also might be One Battle After Another. It is as close as anything onscreen has ever come to a Thomas Pynchon novel that, for me, is the very highest praise."
On the TV side, he had high praise for one standout. "Adolescence for me was far and away the best television of the year, and episode three was one of the greatest episodes of television of all time even though it tears your soul apart."
While fans pick apart every hint Gunn drops online, the filmmaker is gearing up to shoot Man of Tomorrow next year. It’s set to be the project that plants the new DCU’s flag, starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.
There are reports of more DCU players showing up as well, including potential appearances by Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and John Cena returning as Peacemaker. Gunn is also reportedly on the hunt for the new Wonder Woman and still searching for the actor who will bring Brainiac to life.
Once Man of Tomorrow hits theaters on July 9, 2027, the DCU will enter a new phase. Until then, Gunn will likely keep doing what he always does interacting directly with fans, giving advice when he feels it’s needed, and reminding the internet that it’s okay to speak for yourself.
