SUPERNATURAL Season 13 Will Have a Backdoor Pilot to a Spinoff Called WAYWARD SISTERS
Man, remember years ago when Supernatural was sure they would never go more than ten seasons? That's what I remember. Then the tenth season passed and they were like, 'lol, let's keep going forever!'
Well, if there is one thing that the Supernatural show is, it's consistent. I could watch the show go on and on and never get bored. However, the series might be looking to start with a new series spinning off. Wayward Sisters is a show that will focus on Sheriff Jody Mills played by Kim Rhodes as well as an adopted family of girls orphaned by supernatural causes. Many believe that it will bring back previous Supernatural characters like Claire Novak, Alex Jones, and Sheriff Donna Hanscum while also introducing new ones. Supernatural will have an episode in the upcoming thirteenth season that will focus on these characters and serve as a backdoor pilot.
While I do believe that the actors of Supernatural can't keep doing this forever, I wonder how a spinoff series might fare. The first time they tried this with Bloodlines and it fell flat. Ultimately, with the right cast, an idea like this could be great. What makes Supernatural such an entertaining and watchable show is the fact that we've grown to love and care about the characters. We know them so well by now, that we don't care what's going on, as long as they are involved. If Wayward Sisters can find a cast that elicits that same compassion from their fanbase, they might be able to get somewhere.
One struggle they will be facing is that of the power curve. If this spinoff exists in the same world as Supernatural, that suddenly removes a lot of possible story interpretations. Big bads like the devil, certain angels, even specific monsters, have already been dealt with leaving the new group to deal with things either lesser or bigger. And I doubt they can get much bigger than fighting God's sister. I'll hold my judgment for the backdoor pilot. If it does catch on, it may be a good way to finally put their other series to rest.
