Survey Explores The Most Popular Fandoms and Streaming

People are passionate about a lot of different pop culture franchises. These people are typically called fans and they create fandoms. Well, over at Flixed, they surveyed over 1,000 people earlier this year about their favorite franchises and have come up with some interesting data. The first thing people will be interested to hear is that Marvel is the most popular fandom followed by Star Wars and Harry Potter. I’m surprised that Pokémon is low on the list, coming in at only number 11. The survey then looked to see what franchises are often talked about together. Clearly, DC and Marvel are the most combined franchises, followed by Dragon Ball and Pokémon. These two pairings make perfect sense and shouldn’t shock anyone. I was surprised that while not too much lower on the list, the pairing of Star Wars and Star Trek wasn’t more prominent.

The survey also wanted to look at any kind of correlation between the franchises and streaming. Fans of Game of Thrones, Marvel, and Star Wars were the most likely to say that streaming is important to their interaction with the franchise. Possibly unsurprisingly, Gen Z fans were the ones who were willing to pay the most for their chosen franchises and were the most likely to see streaming as an important part of the franchise. The real question though is how much each fandom is willing to pay to stream their franchise. Here, Marvel once again shines with fans willing to pay $10.26, $0.1 more than Star Wars, and fans streamed more Marvel than other franchises on average. However, when you take franchise, age, and gender into account, the most lucrative demographic are the Gen Z male fans of Game of Thrones.

The catch with that last bit though is that the survey found that Game of Thrones fans were also the most likely to drop a streaming service if it no longer had content related to their franchise. So basically, HBO Max is going to do fine.

There were a number of cool takeaways I thought from this survey. What’s your favorite takeaway?
