SUSPIRIA Director Luca Guadagnino Wants To Make Prequel Film That Tells The Story of Markos

Suspiria is easily one of the most nightmarishly horrific films of the year. It was pretty jacked-up and it doesn’t look like director Luca Guadagnino is done playing in the dark and disturbing supernatural world of witches.

He’s already teased a sequel in the post-credits scene for the movie, but now he’s got an idea for a prequel film that will explore the head witch Markos. She is the evil demented witch that is looking for a human vessel to live through.

While talking to The Playlist, Guadagnino shared his prequel concept saying:

“I have this image in my mind. I have this image in my mind of Helena Markos in solitude in the year 1212 in Scotland or in Spain. Wondering through a village and trying to find a way on how she can manipulate the women of the village. I have this image. I know she was there, I know it was six to seven hundred years before the actual storyline of this film.”

I actually would rather see that film before we saw a sequel! That sound so much more intriguing. I particularly like the historical setting. It would also provide an explanation of how Markos possessed her supernatural powers that allowed her to survive for hundreds of years.

When talking about expanding on the story that Suspiria set up, the filmmaker said:

“This because this is a movie layer in times and space. When Patricia [Chloë Grace Moretz] is in that undead situation she says to Sarah, ‘She shows me things.’  What? What kind of thing? Where is she? What is she saying? It’s very fertile what [screenwriter David Kajganich] came up with. So I think, depending on how this movie plays out in theaters we may revisit or once to see. I think this movie particularly is in a way not necessarily something that need to be progressed in advance. A companion piece this could something better deals with different layers of time. Not just the arrow that point the future.”

When previously talking about the sequel Guadagnino said:

“At the beginning we were going to title the movie Suspiria: Part One but we didn’t want to give the impression of something that couldn’t stand alone. Truthfully, I’d be interested to explore the origin of Madame Blanc and Helena Markos and also the future of Susie Bannion in the world. So maybe. We’ll have to see how the movie goes.”

I really hope that he gets a chance to explore these other stories. I wouldn’t mind diving back into the madness of Suspira!

What did you think of the film and would you be interested in watching a prequel or sequel?
