SUSPIRIA Director Luca Guadagnino to Direct the SCARFACE Remake for Universal Pictures
Universal Pictures has hired Call Me by Your Name and Suspira filmmaker Luca Guadagnino to direct their remake of Scarface, which has been in and out of development for years.
The story has already been adapted a number of times, but the most recent version was the 1983 classic starring Al Pacino. The new film will be a reimagining of the core immigrant story told in both the 1932 and 1983 films. This story will be set in Los Angeles and will focus on a Mexican immigrant.
The most recent draft of the script comes from Joel Coen and Ethan Coen (No Country For Old Men, The Big Lebowski, Fargo) from earlier drafts written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, Jonathan Herman and Paul Attanasio. So, at least we know the movie will have a great script to work from!
Diego Luna (Narcos, Rogue One) was said to be attached to the project a few years ago, but there’s no word on if he is still in the running to star in it.
Guadagnino is currently in post-production on the HBO limited series We Are Who We Are, and he’s also developing a new film adaptation of Lord of the Flies. This Scarface movie will be the most high profile project that he’s worked on so far.
