Switch Users are Running Into a Year-Old Game-Stopping Bug in FINAL FANTASY VII

Last May, a bug was found for the Steam version of Final Fantasy VII that prevents the player from progressing.

Currently at the part in Final Fantasy 7 on PC where you have to climb up the plate in Wall Market to get to Shinra HQ. I went to Aeris’ mother and had all of the flashbacks. I talked to Barret and Marlene upstairs. I had the conversation that told me to go to Wall Market. I went to Wall Market and bought the Battery, but there is no kid that leads me to the caverns with AVERLS spraypainted on, and there is no pipe in there. I only have one save, so I can’t revert to before I talk with Aeris’ mother.

I’ve already started this game 3 times and I’m not about to restart again, so is there any fix for this?

If you had more than one save file, you could possibly go to an older save and be fine, but if you only had one, you’d be in big trouble and most likely have to start the game over and pray it didn’t happen again. Well, some fans found ways to manipulate the code to solve the problem without restarting your 3ish hours of work on the story. There’s a problem though, the bug is in the new Switch version of the game.

The most famous Final Fantasy game was recently ported to Nintendo Switch and it brought with it this bug that causes the game to potentially come to a furious stop, hours into the game. While it’s not uncommon to have bugs in your video games, one would hope that a year-old bug of this magnitude would’ve been addressed. What’s more, if you run into this problem on the Switch, you cannot address the problem yourself as easily as the PC version, and there’s not even a way to get a refund for the game if you run into the problem.

I certainly hope that Square Enix looks into this as this is a big problem for fans and newcomers looking to try out what is their most well-known title. I know I was thinking of picking it up, but if it has this kind of bug, you can count me out until it’s fixed. Yes, I know that it is not guaranteed that you’ll run into it, but this is still very concerning as the source of the bug appears to be unknown making it much more difficult to predict if it will happen.
