SWORD ART ONLINE Being Developed into Live-Action TV Series

Sword Art Online has been adapted from manga to anime to video game. Now, it's becoming a live-action TV series. THR reports Skydance Television has announced its plans to turn the game into a live-action series that will be coupled with an immersive VR experience. Skydance issued a statement accompanying the announcement:

“At Skydance we are in the business of world-building and SAO is a massive pop-culture phenomenon from which we plan to launch a full-scale and wide-ranging set of live-action franchise extensions across our business verticals, beginning with television...We look forward to working alongside Laeta [Kalogridis], Reki Kawahara and the teams at Kadowawa and Aniplex to build out a deeply immersive new universe of SAO in an authentic way that honors its well-established fan base around the globe.”

I'm more than a little skeptical about adapting a series that takes place 90% inside a video game to a television series. CGI and television are not a great combination, and an over-reliance on digital effects can make even high budget shows look cheaply made. I know many are going to point to Game of Thrones and say "well, that's not true," but this show is not going to have a GOT budget. It's going to look more like this:

That aired on American network television in prime time and got the response you would imagine.

I think if you want to do this correctly, you use practical effects and traditional animatronic stuff for monsters...or maybe try to find a way to write around the monster element. I guess if you expect it to look cheap, you can't be disappointed. I just don't know if the technology is there yet to make this look good on television. What's your take?
