Sydney Sweeney Calls MADAME WEB a "Strategic Business Decision" That Led to Future Projects at Sony
Sydney Sweeney is best known for her roles on successful series like Euphoria, The Handmaid’s Tale, and The White Lotus. She is fresh off her successful romantic comedy, Anyone But You, has a starring role in the horror film Immaculate, hitting theaters this weekend, and she has a lot of projects in the works. So it seems fairly inconsequential that she happened to appear in one of the worst superhero movies to date, Sony’s Madame Web, but according to Sweeney, the movie was nothing short of a “strategic business decision.”
In a recent interview with GQ, the actress explained the decision to co-star in the movie, saying:
“To me that film was a building block, it’s what allowed me to build a relationship with Sony. Without doing Madame Web I wouldn’t have a relationship with the decision-makers over there. Everything in my career I do not just for that story, but strategic business decisions. Because I did that, I was able to sell Anyone But You. I was able to get Barbarella.”
As for whether the dismal reception of the film dampened her feelings toward ever appearing in another superhero movie again, Sweeney, whose character Julia Carpenter is set up as a future Spider-Woman, is a bit more diplomatic than her co-star, Dakota Johnson, who has said she “will never do anything like it again.” Sweeney said, instead, “I think that if the story is right and you have the right team, I would love to.”
