Sydney Sweeney Packs a Punch in First Trailer for Boxing Biopic CHRISTY
The gloves are on and the punches are real in the first trailer for Christy, the upcoming boxing biopic starring Sydney Sweeney as trailblazing fighter Christy Martin.
The film just had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and now fans get a first look at Sweeney’s intense transformation for the role.
Set in small-town West Virginia, Christy follows the rise of Martin as she breaks into the male-dominated world of boxing during the late 1980s. She becomes a global icon, famously becoming the first female boxer to land the cover of Sports Illustrated.
But as the trailer teases, Martin’s most brutal battles weren’t just in the ring. The film dives deep into her struggles with identity, family, and a dangerous relationship with her trainer-turned-husband Jim Martin, played by Ben Foster.
The drama doesn’t hold back, promising a raw look at a woman who became a world super welterweight champion and earned her place in the Boxing Hall of Fame while fighting personal demons that nearly destroyed her.
The film also features a stacked cast including Merritt Wever, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, Jess Gabor, Chad Coleman, Bryan Hibbard, Tony Cavalero, and Gilbert Cruz. Directed by David Michôd, who also co-wrote the script with Mirrah Foulkes, the story is based on an original concept by Katherine Fugate.
At TIFF, Sweeney opened up about the extreme physical transformation she underwent to bring Christy Martin’s story to life, including gaining 30 pounds to play the role.
“I absolutely loved it,” Sweeney said. “I truly felt Christy’s power as I transformed. And I really enjoyed being able to train and work with incredible boxing coaches and weight trainers and nutritionists that helped me get to the place that I was for Christy.”
Christy is co-produced and distributed by Black Bear and is set to hit theaters on November 7. With the emotional weight of a true underdog story, and I enjoy these kinds of sports stories.
