Taika Waititi Discusses Jane Foster's Story Arc in THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER
Marvel recently released a new trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder that was filled with tons of extremely cool action-packed footage along with some amusing humor. Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster a.k.a. Mighty Thor played a huge part in that trailer as she finds herself reuniting with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor to battle Christian Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher.
Now, director Taika Waititi is talking about Jane Foster’s story arc in the movie, and he reveals that it actually sticks pretty close to her story arc in the comics. While talking to Total Film, he said: "We stick pretty closely to Jane’s storyline, and what happened to Jane... because that was such an influence on the film. We’re trying to take the best parts of that."
The story arc he is talking about is based on Jason Aaron’s comic book run in The Mighty Thor, the story which follows a cancer-stricken Jane Foster as she takes up the mantle and powers of Thor.
The director goes on to point out that this is not a “passing of the torch” film where Mighty Thor will replace Thor. He said: "And also, it’s really fun, the idea that Thor [has] got Stormbreaker, that big axe, and now his hammer’s back and it’s in the hands of someone else. It’s no longer his hammer. It’s the idea that someone’s taking his place. I think a lot of fans are gonna potentially assume, ‘Oh, OK, this is the passing on of the torch’... I’m not privy to any plans Marvel has for the future, but I don’t think that’s the case."
The film finds Thor “on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher, who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie, Korg and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.”
Thor: Love and Thunder opens in theaters on July 8th, 2022.
