Taika Waititi Looking To Direct Adaptation of The Sci-Fi Novel KLARA AND THE SUN
Director Taika Waititi has found another film project that he wants to helm as he’s in negotiations to direct an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s New York Times bestselling sci-fi novel, Klara and the Sun. The project is set up at Sony’s 3000 Pictures with Dahvi Waller writing the script.
The story follows Klara, “a robot girl created to prevent teenagers from becoming lonely. This is the story of how she tries to save a family of humans she lives with from heartbreak.”
It’s explained that Klara is an “Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her.”
The story “offers a look at our changing world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator, and one that explores the fundamental question: what does it mean to love?”
The report says the role of Klara will be one of the more sought-after parts in Hollywood for any actress in her 20s, so it will be interesting to see who actually ends up landing the role.
This seems like a great project for Waititi, who has been developing several projects including a Star Wars film with Lucasfilm, a live-action adaptation of Akira for Warner Bros., and his next film to be released will be Next Goal Wins. There are conflicting reports that the next movie he makes will either be Akira or Star Wars. We’ll just have to wait and see.
David Heyman is producing the film for Heyday Films.
