Taika Waititi Will Direct a Soccer Film Called NEXT GOAL WINS Before THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER

Before director Taika Waititi heads back to Marvel to direct Thor: Love and Thunder, he’s going to direct another mysterious film project that was secretly set up at Fox Searchlight called Next Goal Wins.

The film is said to be based on a 2014 British soccer documentary from directors Mike Brett and Steve Jamison. The story follows Dutch coach Thomas Rongen who “attempts the nearly impossible task of turning the American Samoa soccer team from perennial losers into winners.”

Andy Serkis and Jonathan Cavendish optioned the rights to the documentary in 2015 and they brought it to Waititi who then brought on Garrett Basch to produce.

The film is moving forward fast, and the plan is for Waititi to start shooting it this fall. The filmmaker recently worked with Fox Searchlight on his upcoming film, Jojo Rabbit. and they were obviously very eager to work with each other again.

I’ve enjoyed everything that Waititi has made in his career so far, so I’m sure I’ll like this one too.
