Take a Look at the Abyssal Chicken From D&D's DESCENT INTO AVERNUS

A while ago, we heard about a new creature coming to Dungeons & Dragons called the abyssal chicken. I imagined a demonic, fiery version of Hei Hei from Moana, and apparently, I was very wrong.

The latest issue of Dragon+ (the official digital magazine of D&D) included a first look at this new creature, and I don’t think I agree with Chris Perkins about the artwork “kick[ing] ass.” Don’t get me wrong, I don’t dislike it, I was just imagining more to it in order to receive that kind of praise and that being one of two reasons why it was even included. I guess I’m just underwhelmed by it.

In addition, Jim Zub, who consulted on Descent Into Avernus, said:

The abyssal chicken may be the greatest invention but I can’t take credit for that. Artist Max Dunbar was putting together concept art for the center of Avernus and needed something for scale. He suggested using wildlife and they said ‘It’s Hell, there’s no wildlife!’ So Max suggested birds or flocks of something and eventually the idea of the abyssal chicken came up. They’re disgusting. And wonderful.

What do you think about the design for the abyssal chicken? Am I being too much of a curmudgeon?
