Tangled Contracts Give Spider-Man an X-Men Post Credits Scene

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theaters today over in the UK and viewers are in for a little treat if they stay after the credits... a montage sequence of X-Men: Days of Future Past. That's no typo. The scene puts Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique front and center alongside Toad and Havok fighting against a young William Stryker's goons. Now, before your heads collectively explode from the idea of the X-Men and Spider-Man universes being tied together, I have to be honest. This is not a crossover. I hate to be that guy, but I am about to burst your bubble.

The reasoning for Sony promoting a rival's superhero flick turns out to have nothing to do with superheroes and everything to do with Indie RomComs.

You see, Marc Webb was under contract over at Fox Searchlight to make another film after 500 Days of Summer, but after he began working on the Spider-Man universe it became clearer and clearer that he wouldn't be able to follow through with his contractual obligations. So Fox agreed to allow Webb to continue to direct Sony’s Spider-Man sequels, but only if Sony would promote its X-Men film for free.

So there you have it. Let me reiterate: this is not a crossover. As much as we'd love to see universes collide, it isn't happening anytime soon.
