Taron Egerton Joins Channing Tatum and Zazie Beetz in Crime Thriller KOCKROACH
Taron Egerton is officially stepping into the world of Kockroach, the upcoming New York crime thriller that teams him with Channing Tatum and Zazie Beetz. The project hails from producers Andrew Lazar (American Sniper) and Kevin Frakes (Hereditary), with Matt Ross (Captain Fantastic) directing.
Egerton takes over a role that was originally set for Oscar Isaac, who exited due to scheduling conflicts. The film, described as a gritty, stylish dive into the criminal underbelly of New York, sounds like a throwback to some of cinema’s greatest gangster stories.
Lazar teased what audiences can expect, saying the film is “in the vein of Goodfellas and Scarface.” The official synopsis reads: “Kockroach is the story of a mysterious stranger who takes on New York’s criminal underworld, transforming himself into a larger-than-life crime boss in a city where power is everything.”
Based on the novel by William Lashner, Kockroach is set to begin filming in February in Australia, despite being set in the heart of New York. The screenplay comes from Jonathan Ames (You Were Never Really Here) with revisions by Ross.
Lazar shared his excitement for the film’s growing ensemble and ambitious vision, saying: “I couldn’t be more excited to welcome Taron to Kockroach and to see him team up with Channing and Zazie in this fresh and bold take on the gangster genre.
“Under the extraordinary talent of director Matt Ross, Kockroach will push boundaries and expectations in the same ways as such seminal films as Scarface and Goodfellas.
“I’m also thrilled to see our incredible creative team coming together. Academy Award-winning production designer Colin Gibson, DP Adam Arkapaw, and VFX Supervisor Jonathan Dearing.”
Egerton, who broke out with Kingsman and earned acclaim for Rocketman and Black Bird, has been keeping busy. He recently starred in the Apple TV+ series Smoke and the upcoming crime film She Rides Shotgun.
