TAXI DRIVER Writer Paul Schrader Offers His Brutally Honest Thoughts on JOKER: FOLIE À DEUX
As Joker: Folie à Deux continues to die at the box office, screenwriter Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver) comes in kicking the film while it’s down by sharing his brutally honest thoughts on it.
The movie hasn’t really connected with critics or fans. While director Todd Phillips said he was inspired by the likes of classic films such as The King of Comedy and Taxi Driver, the writer of Taxi Driver hated the the movie.
While talking to Interview Magazine, Schrader admitted that he hated everything about Joker: Folie à Deux. In fact, he couldn’t even finish watching the movie because it was so bad.
He said: "I saw Joker: Folie à Deux. I saw about 10 or 15 minutes of it. I left, bought something, came back, saw another 10 minutes. That was enough. It’s a really bad musical."
When he was Pushed on why he hated it so much, Schrader put part of the blame on Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga.
"I don’t like either of those people. I don’t like them as actors. I don’t like them as characters. I don’t like the whole thing. I mean, those are people who, if they came to your house, you’d slip out the back door."
Schrader was then asked whether he had ever considered working on a Marvel movie. As you might expect, that’s something he’s just not interested in.
He explained: "No, no. The closest I got to it, and I realized it really wasn’t for me, was when I tried to do the prequel to The Exorcist with Stellan Skarsgård.
“That was supposed to be a big-budget commercial film and it didn’t set easy with me. I had problems with the producers, problems with everything. More and more, I realized it was a bad fit."
As of right now, it’s looking like Joker: Folie à Deux stands to lose Warner Bros. as much as $200 million after it’s dismal box office run.
