Teaser Trailer Erupts For GODZILLA MINUS ZERO and Godzilla is Heading To New York City
The King of the Monsters is officially back, and things are about to get even worse for humanity. Toho and GKIDS have dropped the first trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero, the highly anticipated follow-up to Godzilla Minus One, and it looks like this next chapter is doubling down on the destruction, emotion, and scale that made the previous film such a massive hit.
Godzilla Minus One was originally released as part of Toho’s 70th anniversary celebration of the franchise, and it crushed expectations. The film became the most successful entry in the long-running series both critically and commercially. So yeah, a sequel wasn’t exactly a surprise. Still, seeing it come together this fast and this big is pretty exciting.
Now, Godzilla Minus Zero is set to hit theaters worldwide later this Fall, and the newly released trailer finally gives fans a taste of what’s coming next. A
long with the reveal, GKIDS and Toho confirmed the return of two key cast members. Ryunosuke Kamiki is back as Koichi Shikishima, and Minami Hamabe returns as Noriko Oishi, picking up their story after everything they endured in the first film.
The film premieres in Japan on November 3rd, followed closely by its North American debut on November 6th. That tight window between regions is a big move forward for international releases. It’s also making history as the first Japanese production ever filmed specifically for an IMAX release, which should make Godzilla feel even more overwhelming on the big screen.
Story-wise, details are still mostly under wraps, but we do know the film is set in 1949, two years after the events of Godzilla Minus One. According to the official press release, it will “continue the story of the Shikishima family as they face an all-new calamity.”
With Takashi Yamazaki returning as director, screenwriter, and VFX supervisor, the sequel has the same creative force that made the previous film hit so hard. Yamazaki is once again working with Toho Studios, with ROBOT producing and SHIROGUMI Inc. handling the visual effects.
Godzilla looks just as terrifying, if not more so, and the scale of destruction seems to be ramping up. Pair that with the grounded, human storytelling that made the first film stand out, and this sequel could end up hitting just as hard, if not harder.
Between the returning cast, the IMAX production, and the close global release window, Godzilla Minus Zero is shaping up to be one of the biggest international releases of the year, and the Kaiju is ready to Terrorize New York City!
