Teaser Trailer for France's Epic New LES MISÉRABLES Movie Promises a Powerful Return to Victor Hugo's Classic
France continues its run of giving legendary literary classics massive cinematic makeovers, and the next one looks like it's going to be something special.
Following the success of new adaptations of The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, Studiocanal has released the first teaser trailer for a brand new take on Les Misérables, bringing Victor Hugo's legendary novel back to the big screen in an epic historical drama.
Unlike the version many audiences immediately think of, this isn't another musical adaptation. Instead, director Fred Cavayé is telling Hugo's story as a sweeping period drama centered on redemption, justice, sacrifice, and revolution.
The teaser offers a glimpse at a visually impressive production packed with large-scale sets, emotional performances, and the turmoil of revolutionary France. It looks like Cavayé is leaning fully into the emotional weight and historical scope of Hugo's beloved novel.
The story follows Jean Valjean, a man sentenced to 19 years in prison after stealing a loaf of bread. Once released, he breaks his parole and attempts to build a new life under a different identity, determined to become a better man. His path crosses with the relentless Inspector Javert, who refuses to stop hunting him down, convinced justice can only be served by bringing Valjean back into custody.
The film stars Vincent Lindon as Jean Valjean and Tahar Rahim as Javert. The cast also includes Camille Cottin as Madame Thénardier, Benjamin Lavernhe as Thénardier, Noémie Merlant as Fantine, Megan Northam as Cosette, along with Vassili Schneider, Marie Colomb, and Louis Peres.
The official synopsis reads: “After enduring 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread, Jean Valjean (award-winning actor Vincent Lindon) emerges a hardened man. He seeks redemption by reinventing himself as a respected dignitary under a new identity.
“He promises Fantine, a dying factory worker, to rescue and protect her daughter Cosette, who is being exploited & mistreated by the deceitful Thénardier family. As Valjean raises Cosette as his own, he is relentlessly pursued by Inspector Javert.
“Admist the social unrest shaking France, the fates of Valjean, Cosette, her lover Marius, and Javert become intertwined in a turbulent, revolutionary Paris. Through struggles, sacrifices, and a deep yearning for justice, Valjean strives to complete his own journey of redemption and offer Cosette a future of love and freedom.”
Les Misérables is written and directed by Cavayé, whose previous credits include Anything for Her, Point Blank, Mea Culpa, Penny Pincher, Nothing to Hide, Farewell Mr. Haffmann, and This is the Goat. The screenplay adapts Hugo's landmark 1862 novel, with Olivier Delbosc and Richard Grandpierre producing.
