Teaser Trailer for OUR EFFED UP WORLD Unleashes an Alien Invasion With Killer Klowns Energy and Chaotic Fun
Indie genre filmmaker Alice Maio Mackay is back with another wild-looking horror project, and if you're into scrappy, offbeat sci-fi movies packed with monsters, mayhem, and dark humor, Our Effed Up World looks like it should be on your radar.
The first teaser trailer has arrived, offering a quick glimpse at Mackay's latest alien invasion story, which is heading to this year's Fantasia Film Festival.
The movie centers on Sheri, whose life is already falling apart after the death of her grandmother. Unfortunately for her, grief quickly becomes the least of her worries when something from another world crashes into the nearby woods.
Before long, she and her close-knit crew find themselves standing between humanity and a ravenous extraterrestrial force that threatens to consume everything in its path.
Fantasia Film Festival sums up the movie's vibe, describing it as: "With her latest film, Our Effed Up World, Mackay takes inspiration from the alien-invasion genre. As Sheri grapples with the loss of her grandmother, a mysterious entity crashes in the woods nearby.
“Soon only Sheri & her friends stand between the survival of the world and an alien hunger that will consume us all. Paying homage to films like Killer Klowns from Outer Space and cutesy girl-power vibes of The Powerpuff Girls, Mackay’s sense of humour is absurd, biting, and fun."
Blending the over-the-top charm of Killer Klowns from Outer Space with the colorful attitude of The Powerpuff Girls isn't exactly a pairing you hear every day, but judging by this teaser, Mackay is fully embracing the weirdness.
The cast includes Sara Thompson, Annapurna Sriram, Jess McLeod, Scott Major, Brandon Flynn, Jordan Dulieu, Jack Haven, Leela Varghese, Chris Gun, and Tommy Dorfman.
Mackay directs from a screenplay she co-wrote with Ben Pahl Robinson, and the film is produced by Mackay alongside Jane Schoenbrun.
There's still no official release date beyond its festival run, but if you're a fan of inventive indie sci-fi horror and filmmakers who aren't afraid to throw together outrageous genre influences, this is one to keep an eye on.
